Take Gold Bar Whiskey. The brand has deeply woven its identity around the history of Treasure Island and the 1939 World’s Fair.

Every element ties back: the tasting room is located in the Admin Building of Treasure Island. It’s Treasure Island cocktail is inspired by a drink served at the fair.
Every whiskey bottle is sealed with a gold coin bearing 17 stars, one for each of the 17 million people who visited the fair.
And after cocktail classes, guests are told a story that connects the brand and the island’s past to the glass in their hand.

- Touch: Invite guests to shake, stir, garnish, and build their own cocktails with hands-on guidance. Add textured menus or interactive garnish stations to increase tactile engagement.
- Sound: Celebrate the unique sounds of mixology: the rattle of a shaker, the crack of fresh ice, the fizz of a pour. Pair that with a curated soundtrack or ambient soundscape to elevate the atmosphere. 8

- Guided Tastings with a Twist – Use storytelling, aroma prompts, or mystery ingredients to turn a tasting into an interactive journey.
- Themed Role-Play Nights – Invite guests into the world of the brand. From Prohibition-style speakeasies to global cocktail adventures, they join the show. 17
- Group Activities + Drinking Games – Simple, low-barrier activities like garnish challenges, trivia rounds, or team-building pours get people laughing and talking. 18

Design for Social Interaction
Bars and events should be places where people meet new friends and deepen old bonds. But too often, they fall short.
Guests sip a beer, scroll their phones, and go home. Even friend groups can fizzle into silence without something to spark connection.
That’s where designing for social interaction matters.
When the environment nudges people to interact through group tables, shared activities, or light structure, the whole night changes.
From bar trivia and team-based tasting challenges to guided mixology classes or role-play nights, there are many ways to turn passive sipping into real social engagement.
In my cocktail classes, I always introduce guests to each other. I call them “your new friends,” guide them through a shared, hands-on experience and then seat them at the same table.
By the end of class, I often see strangers laughing together and sometimes even heading out to a second bar together.
Total strangers, now friends. That’s real magic.
And the business impact goes beyond the fun.
